The Journey of Mr. Tod’s Pies: Then and Now
Posted by Mr. Tod on Jun 22nd 2025
In the late 1990s, my original vision started with a simple question: “Why bake, when we can do it for you?” That question led to the creation of whybake.com — my first attempt at building an online destination for premium desserts, long before e-commerce became what it is today.
But as business often goes, the journey took a different turn. Instead of becoming a marketplace for others, I found myself perfecting my own recipes and introducing America to the pies that would eventually define the Mr. Tod’s brand — most notably, our now-famous Sweet Potato Pie.
Over the years, Mr. Tod’s Pies grew from farmers markets to regional grocery stores, direct-to-consumer shipping, and even national media exposure — including a pioneering appearance as the very first entrepreneur ever to pitch on Shark Tank.
Today, Mr. Tod’s Pies is writing a new chapter.
With a renewed focus on expanding access to our premium Southern-style desserts, we are entering new markets and meeting customers where they are — from our upcoming retail bakery café in Newark, NJ to national availability on modern delivery platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Walmart Marketplace.
Our original whybake.com domain still lives on — quietly redirecting to our flagship site at mrtods.com — a reminder of where this journey began, and how far it has come.
We’re not done yet. In many ways, we’re just getting started. Serving pie to bring people together.
